To reduce risk for disabled people, it is important to design public features with them in mind.

Steps can be difficult for people with disabilities to navigate. If a level approach to the building’s entrance cannot be achieved, then steps and a ramp must be provided. Steps are preferred to ramps by many people, and, when correctly detailed, steps provide independent access for many ambulant disabled people – for example, those with arthritis or those who use crutches. However, steps are a barrier to people in wheelchairs or with pushchairs/prams etc, so a ramp should be provided wherever there are steps. The External Approach: Steps Access Audit Survey Toolkit (UK) app informs users about building standards for steps and corrective actions that can be taken for steps that are not easily accessible for all. The app covers: approach and landings, height, risers and goings, nosings, edge protection, step surface and type, width of steps, handrails, balustrades, and lighting.

“I’m not a tech guy and I was able to pick this thing up in probably an hour, and actually start to build apps. I’ve done them over lunch when I’ve gotten frustrated with a process that didn’t exist in our company. So for non tech people who’ve got a problem, the support here is awesome and I’d recommend it to anybody, not just in our industry.”
