Following a preventative maintenance plan, technicians can inspect and test different functions and equipment pieces of the generator of over the lifespan of the power system. Caterpillar initiated the Generator Preventative Maintenance Checklist (3Y) app for technicians to conduct routine maintenance on emergency generators in three-year increments. The app outlines tools, safety equipment, and materials that a technician may require including battery tester, coolant life extender, oil, air, and fuel filters, and an insulation tester. The user can access safety procedures that include recording all test results and damage to equipment. The app offers a comprehensive checklist for performing the three-year inspection that includes obtaining a cooling system coolant sample, inspecting the water pump, cleaning the engine and engine protective devices. With this app, a technician can follow step-by-step safety and general procedure to ensure routine maintenance to an emergency generator is completed thoroughly and with great care.

“I’m not a tech guy and I was able to pick this thing up in probably an hour, and actually start to build apps. I’ve done them over lunch when I’ve gotten frustrated with a process that didn’t exist in our company. So for non tech people who’ve got a problem, the support here is awesome and I’d recommend it to anybody, not just in our industry.”
